Building Climate Resilience through Parametric Insurance: Fiji's Experience in Climate and Disaster Risk Finance
Fiji Government
Fiji will showcase how Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance (CDRFI) and parametric insurance are strengthening resilience, protecting vulnerable communities, and supporting climate adaptation across Small Island Developing States. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of disasters across the Pacific, placing vulnerable households, farmers, fishers, and small businesses at greater financial risk. Through the Pacific Insurance and Climate Adaptation Programme (PICAP), Fiji is expanding access to Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance (CDRFI), including parametric insurance, to improve financial preparedness and accelerate recovery following climate-related disasters. The programme combines financial literacy, community awareness, innovative insurance products, and strategic partnerships to strengthen climate resilience while integrating climate risk financing into national development planning. The side event will highlight Fiji's experience in promoting financial literacy, expanding access to affordable parametric insurance for vulnerable communities, and strengthening partnerships across government, development partners, and the private sector. Panel discussions will explore lessons learned, opportunities for scaling climate risk insurance across Small Island Developing States, and the role of innovative finance in supporting adaptation, disaster resilience, and sustainable development.
