Launching Vanuatu's National Adaptation Plan

Government of the Republic of Vanuatu, Global Green Growth Institute

Watch Live

Vanuatu National Side Event and National Adaptation Plan Launch The Government of Vanuatu has developed its National Adaptation Plan (NAP) as a strategic, evidence-based framework for coordinated and inclusive adaptation. The Plan is grounded in the Vanuatu Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) and aligns adaptation with national development priorities, the National Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction Policy (CCDRRP), and Vanuatu’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The NAP is organised around three strategic outcomes: protecting people, livelihoods, essential services and place; enabling locally led and inclusive adaptation; and sustaining long-term resilience. It covers nine priority sectors; agriculture, ecosystems, education, fisheries, forestry, health and nutrition, infrastructure, tourism, and water, sanitation and hygiene, and links national priorities to provincial led implementation through six Provincial Adaptation Plans, Area Council planning processes and Community Climate Adaptation Plans (CCAPs). The Plan represents a shift from fragmented projects towards a whole-of-government and whole-of-society adaptation system. It combines climate science with kastom and traditional knowledge; embeds gender equality, disability and social inclusion; clarifies coordination and sector accountability; and is supported by financing, monitoring and learning, communications, and institutional coordination arrangements. Its success will depend on accessible and predictable finance, strengthened institutional and technical capacity, usable climate information, and partnerships that reinforce national and local leadership.
