This side event will showcase how the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) project has and is strengthening institutional and technical capacity across Pacific Island Countries (PICs) to support the implementation of the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) and the preparation of Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs). The transition to ETF under the Paris Agreement presents both opportunities and challenges for PICs, particularly in establishing sustainable national transparency systems. The CBIT project is a critical mechanism for strengthening institutional arrangements, enhancing technical capacity, improving greenhouse gas inventory systems, developing digital systems in supporting the preparation of BTRs. This side event will bring together Fiji and other PICs implementing CBIT projects to share practical experiences, lessons learned, and innovative approaches to building enduring transparency systems. As Fiji concludes its CBIT project, the country will reflect on key achievements, including strengthened institutional coordination, enhanced national reporting processes, and the development of digital tools that support greenhouse gas inventories and NDC tracking. Other Pacific countries at different stages of CBIT implementation will present their progress, challenges, and priorities, fostering peer-to-peer learning and regional collaboration. The discussion will highlight how sustained investments in transparency capacity contribute not only to meeting ETF reporting requirements but also to strengthening national climate planning, evidence-based decision-making, and access to climate finance. The event aims to identify opportunities for continued regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and long-term support to ensure Pacific countries are well-positioned to deliver high-quality and timely BTRs while advancing climate ambition.
